Let’s face it, Thanksgiving is a minefield of delicious temptations. Buttery mashed potatoes, stuffing loaded with sausage, and of course, that inevitable mountain of pie. While I love indulging in holiday treats as much as the next person, I also like to keep my macros in check (even on Thanksgiving!).
That’s why I created this Low-Sugar Apple Crumble Pie. It’s the most macro-friendly apple pie you’ll ever find, and it still manages to hit all those classic Thanksgiving flavors.
The Secret to Macro-Friendly Magic:
This pie is all about smart swaps and simple tricks. We’re using a ready-made frozen pie crust to save time and effort. The apple filling is lightly sweetened (because apples are already sweet, duh!), and the crumble topping is packed with pecans for extra flavor and nutrition.
Pecans Over Butter and Sugar:
I used less crumble topping than you’d typically find in an apple pie, and I beefed it up with chopped pecans. Pecans are not only delicious but also packed with healthy fats and fiber. (Feel free to use walnuts or other nuts/seeds if you prefer. And if you can’t tolerate nuts, just double the crumble topping. It’s Thanksgiving ā you deserve a treat!)
No Pre-Cooking Required:
You don’t need to pre-cook the apples or add a ton of sugar to them. Trust me, they’ll soften up beautifully in the oven, and their natural sweetness will shine through.
Ice Cream is Your Friend:
If you’re topping your pie with ice cream (which I highly recommend!), you definitely won’t miss the extra sugar in the filling. The combination of warm apple pie and cold ice cream is pure perfection.
Thanksgiving-Approved:
I served this pie to my non-health-conscious friends this Thanksgiving, and it was a huge hit! Everyone raved about the flavor and texture, and no one even suspected it was a healthier version.
PS. Let me write you an amazing ninja creami recipe i used to go along with this in the recipe notes.

Low-sugar Apple Crumble Pie
Ingredients
Filling
- 4 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick (about 2 lbs)
- 2 tbsp brown/coconut sugar (24 g)
- 1 tbsp flour (7 g) gf all purpose if desired
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon (7 g)
- (optional) dash of lemon juice you can also add some lemon zest
Crumble topping
- 1/4 cup brown/coconut sugar (48 g)
- 1/4 cup flour (30 g) gf all purpose if desired
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp (plant) butter (28 g)
- 1/4 cup pecans, chopped (28 g) sub other nuts/seeds, can increase to 1/2 cup
Crust
- 1 pie crust, 9 inch store-bought (vegan/gf if desired) or use the homemade crust linked in the recipe notes
Instructions
- Prepare the crumble topping by combining the butter, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and chopped pecans. You can either stir your melted butter in or cut in all ingredients with pastry cutter until pea-sized. Set aside.
- Combine the apples, sugar, flour and cinnamon. Toss gently together and set aside.
- Prep your pie crust as per package instructions (it might require pre-baking) or if using homemade crust, roll it into a 9-inch pie plate. Press gently into the bottom of the pan. Flute the edge, or crimp using a fork.
- Preheat oven to 350F when ready to bake.
- Add apple pie filling to the crust, then sprinkle the crumble on top of the pie filling.
- Bake for 30 minutes. Cover with foil, and continue baking for 20-25 minutes. Tent the foil at the 45-minute mark to prevent the crust and topping from getting too brown.
- Remove from the oven and allow the pie to cool before serving. Refrigerating helps set it beautifully.
